How the lot size is worked out
For pairs quoted in US dollars, such as EUR/USD, one standard lot is 100,000 units and one pip is worth $10. For JPY pairs a pip is worth 1,000 ÷ the USD/JPY rate, and for CHF and CAD pairs 10 ÷ the USD/CHF or USD/CAD rate.
Example: a $10,000 account risking 1% is $100. With a 20-pip stop on EUR/USD each lot loses $200 at the stop, so the position is 100 ÷ 200 = 0.50 lots. The result is rounded down to 0.01 lots so you never risk more than you planned.
Questions
What is one lot?
In forex one standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency, so 0.10 lots is 10,000 units. Gold is usually 100 ounces per lot. Index and crypto contracts differ between platforms, so check the symbol information in cTrader or DXtrade and enter that contract size.
Why does it compare my trade with the daily loss limit?
On a funded or evaluation account the daily loss limit ends the account, not just the day. On the Instant Funded it is 3% of the previous end-of-day balance, on the 1-Step Challenge and 2-Step Challenge 5%. Seeing how many losing trades in a row fit inside that limit is a quick check that your risk per trade is sustainable.
Does it include spread and commission?
No. The result is the loss at your stop price. Spread, commission and slippage add to it, so leave some room, especially around news.
Is this the same as the margin I need?
No. Margin depends on leverage. Forex leverage is 1:30 on Instant Funded, 1:50 on the 1-Step and 1:100 on the 2-Step. The position size here is about risk, which is what the loss limits measure.
